Georg Bleikolm, aka KnoR, staged his latest album “Planet” as an immersive experience at Gessnerallee in Zurich in January 2019.

The transmedia concert-installation is inspired by David Bowie's Space Oddity and invites the audience to get lost on a journey through the universe. The surreal narrative is set between dreams and memories, reality and virtuality, space and time. It unveils in an immersive setup designed to trigger all senses and prompts the audience to let go and take off. Georg invites us to dive into an exhilarating expedition between planets, mental states and identity construction, between audiovisual performance and electronic pop music in order to reflect about the impact of media technologies on our ability to differentiate storytelling from reality.

I figured out that it would be great to be able to share this show with more people and decided to engage into a 360° documentation of the project. The video featured here is an excerpt of this documentation and in a way a prototype of the kind of experience we hope to be able to stage and to share at the interface of reality and virtuality in the near future. For the documentation we combined the flexibility of a GoPro Fusion to the professional grade of the AMBEO VR Mic.

The mic offers a unique access to start to unveil your audiovisual project in a 360° room. The usage for our setup was straightforward and the room unveiled to our ears shortly after we came back to the studio. Using the AMBEO A-B Converter, we were quickly able to find our raster to start an Ambisonics mixdown. Placing our multi-channel recording in a virtual room based on the imprint made with the AMBEO VR Mic, the beautiful thing was to notice the relevance of the imprint when it came to meaningfully tie the different elements together in the mix. The VR Mic signal is like this magic sauce that will keep your mix together and give a meaning to the virtual room you are creating. I hadn’t expected that the process would be so easy and so gratifying.

Georg Bleikolm was born in Lausanne and settled in Zurich 15 years ago. His heart oscillates between music, science, technology and media. Before he decided to concentrate on his solo projects “KnoR” Georg Bleikolm toured worldwide as a drummer with various bands for a decade and worked as a music producer. As a solo artist Georg combines his different fields of interest and experiments with new concert formats and transmedia sound installations. Budapest based live sound engineer Dávid Rikk, is the head of sound at Akvárium Klub, Hungary’s biggest indoor venue with multiple concert halls. His primary goal is to bring concerts closer to the audience by creating a massive yet still dynamic sounding show and transmit the personality and intimacy of the performing artist. This attitude is behind creating AMBEO 360 @ Akvárium Klub series.

Katarina is a Swiss based podcast producer and the founder of the Swiss Podcast Club, creator’s collective which aims to bring great podcasts out of Switzerland through exchange and knowledge sharing.
